Interesting Facts on Basset Hounds:


Basset Hounds originate from France where they were bred to hunt small game species such as rabbits, foxes, pheasant and badgers. They were very popular as hunting dogs for as they were slow and easy to follow on foot.
 
In the nineteenth century they were cross bred with Blood Hounds to increase their body size.
 
The Basset Hounds long ears are used to sweep scent from the ground towards its nose when tracking something.
 
The name Basset Hound originates from the French word “Bas”, meaning “low” because of their low body postures.
 
They are very well known as a dog that barks, howls and drools a lot.
 
Marilyn Monroe owned a Basset Hound which she named Hugo.
 
Their long droopy ears are serious dust collectors and should be cleaned at least once a week.
 
They are also known by the nickname “the hush puppy dog”. Hush Puppy shoes have the logo of a Basset Hound on it. The real name of this Basset is Jason.
